Promotion
We promoted the March Break events at Antibes through a flyer that was distributed at Antibes Community Center and at Centennial Library. It was also shared with our Youth mailing list (over 45 members). We really did not know what to expect or how many people would attend. In the early afternoon of Wednesday March 12, Berhang and Chilombo attended the Outdoor Graffiti Art workshop which was hosted by Benoit Tardif, Youth Outreach Worker at Antibes C.C. Some more promotion was done for our Basketball Slam-O-Rama which would be held in the afternoon.
The gym was crowded which is usual for a Wednesday afternoon. There were about 20- 25 kids in the gym playing games of 3 on 3 on the side rims, and a game of full-court going on at the same time. We started the Slam-o-Rama at around 5:30pm. Most of the boys in the gym were Antibes regulars, Northview and Newtonbrook students.
Behrang and I introduced ourselves and the ANC project to the youth. Most of the youth already knew me from Antibes . We organized the youth and had about 20 kids participate in 2 competitions, 3 point shooting, and free-throws.
The youth had a lot of fun and really appreciated the event and the prizes. The prizes were some baseball hats and t-shirts purchased at Si Vous Play Sports in Yorkgate mall for about $120.
One success story that came out of the event was a young Filipino kid in about grade 6 or 7 who was just hanging out on the sidelines watching the competitions. I knew this kid was quiet just from seeing him around the community center over the past couple of years. With some encouragement from me and Behrang we got him to actually participate in the free-throw competition. He didn't miss a shot in the 1 st round (10 for 10) and went on to win the free-throw competition and a t-shirt. This definitely earned him some props from some of the older guys.
At the end of the competitions we invited the youth back for pizza and an intro to Quick Start the next afternoon.
